Biography

Career
Albert Marie Joseph CLAUDOT, descendant in a long line of luthiers, was the oldest son of Charles Felix CLAUDOT (1). He was the fifth generation of Luthiers from this distinguished family
Fatherless at age 7, we are not certain about where he served his apprenticeship, but believe that like his brother Pierre after him, he trained in violin making at the workshops of Jérôme THIBOUVILLE LAMY.

Albert joined his uncle François CLAUDOT in Dijon first as an assistant and then as a partner. During this period, instruments were made bearing the label “Claudot & Neveu”. (see "Iconography" in François CLAUDOT).

The reasons that led him to set up on his own are unknown to us, but in September 1936, Albert opened his workshop in the rue Amiral Roussin (2).
In 1939, he married Louise Cortey. This union produced a son, Pierre, born in 1942. Pierre became a luthier and the successor to his father.

Albert CLAUDOT was the luthier of the Philharmonic Society, the Opera Orchestra, and the Dijon Conservatory (3).
The work reproduced in the “Iconography “ section was made by André Claudot, a cousin , as a sign for Albert’s stand at the Dijon Fair of 1923 (3).

A photo of Albert CLAUDOT, taken a year before his death and showing him in his studio, can be seen on the HAL website: https://hal.science/medihal-00723447

Works
Albert CLAUDOT mainly produced violins. His instruments are for the most part coated with a rich red to orange-red varnish, and in rare cases a golden yellow varnish. They are characterized by a personal interpretation of the classic models, in particular the design of the F’s (F holes).

Label & stamp
His instruments have a label indicating the year and their serial number.
They are, with rare exceptions, signed and branded inside and have an Iron Mark, under the button, on the bottom side (see Iconography).
