Biography

Career
Alexandre DELANOY began his apprenticeship in 1864 in MIRECOURT in the HUSSON-BUTHOD-THIBOUVILLE company.
In April 1868, with his apprenticeship completed, DELANOY took like many others before him the road to Paris to join the workshop of Jean-Baptiste VUILLAUME.

On December 31, 1869, DELANOY left Vuillaume and in January 1870 joined the shop of GAND & BERNARDEL. There he remained only nine months before commencing his obligatory military service in the French Army.
In 1875, having finished his service, DELANOY returned to MIRECOURT. We know very little of his next five years except that he married there in 1880.
Later that same year, he moved to Bordeaux to take over the workshop of Nicolas VAILLANT at 45 rue Condillac.

In 1922, DELANOY retired, and left his shop to his business partner Marcel LAPOUGE.

Works
From his time with J.B. VUILLAUME, Alexandre DELANOY developed the taste for instruments made as copies of the old Masters, especially those made in the Guarneri del Gesu model.
His preference being for one piece backs, made from select beautifully curled maple, with a rich and soft varnish, ranging from orange to red-burgundy, generally applied over a golden yellow ground.
His overall works were of great precision and remarkable aesthetic unity.
