Summary

Jean-Baptiste COLIN, also known as COLIN DUCHENE, should not be confused with NICOLAS DUCHENE, as is the case with some biographical notes. As “DUCHENE” was his wife’s name, we find it added to his name after their marriage, following the custom observed among the Vosges luthiers.

Another source of error among biographers, lies with the common first name “Jean Baptiste” and the near homonymy of their last names COLIN and COLLIN-MEZIN.

Biography

Jean-Baptiste COLIN was born on February 15, 1815 in Thuilleres to Jean-Baptiste COLIN and Marguerite Catherine Mougeot (1).
To date, we have no information about his apprenticeship or his career before he moved to Nancy.

While we do not know the exact date of his marriage to Francoise Virginie DUCHENE, who was born on January 31 1817 in MIRECOURT, we believe their marriage to have taken place before 1837, when their first child Franceline was not (1).

In 1840 he moved to 14 rue de la Poissonerie in Nancy, and then in 1851 to 15 rue Stanislas. He died in Nancy on January 25,1889 at the age of 74.
