Biography

Professional Career
In all likelihood, Joseph HENRY began his apprenticeship in MIRECOURT before moving to Paris in 1837 at age 14, to join the workshop of Georges CHANOT, followed by a period in the workshop of Dominique PECCATTE where he completed his training and starting to produce bows in collaboration with the master.
From 1845 on, he perfected his style and produced bows made solely by himself. It is from this year that the first bows fully attributed to HENRY are seen.
In 1847, when Dominique PECCATTE returned to MIRECOURT, HENRY began his association with Pierre SIMON. This collaboration lasted until 1851.

By 1851, HENRY’s talents were clearly realized in his production of fine bows. It is probable that in this period he collaborated with JB VUILLAUME and resided in Paris at 8 rue de Vieux Augustins.

Around 1865,HENRY’s work, like many Bowmakers from this period, showed its evolution in the style of the head. During this period, he produced a number of bows for GAND Freres.

At the end of his life, Henry returned to live in Paris on the rue Pagevin. (1)
