Biography
Career
Jean-Baptiste Leonidas NADEGINI, also known as "Corolla" or "Corolia", is the son of Alexandro Salvatore NADEGINI, an Italian violin maker who moved to Russia at the end of the 19th century.
J.B. Leonidas NADEGINI began his apprenticeship with his father before joining Frantz SPIDLEN's workshop in Moscow (the successor of SALZARD).
J.B. Leonidas NADEGINI moved to Paris where he established himself at 32 rue Legendre.
In 1912 he moves his workshop 104 rue des Dames, then in 1918, 205 ter, rue de Vanves, before ultimately moving to what seems his last address, 140 rue Saint Charles, as stated on the label of a violin dated 1930.
Works
JB L Nadegini has left a large production of violins, violas and cellos made mainly after the classical Italian masters. His catalogue also presents a production of “Viole d’amour” but until now we have not seen any instrument of that type by this maker.
For the violas, beside classical models, JB Leonidas NADEGINI developed a personal model after the suggestions of M. Maurice VIEUX, viola teacher at the Paris Conservatory of music.
Beside his own instruments, JB Leonidas NADEGINI developed a production of student quality instrument produced by the workshop of Amédée DIEUDONNÉ in MIRECOURT. ( See #3710)
Label & stamp
- Printed label on the inside back, with a signature on the label.
- Small oval stamp to the inside back reading "NADEGINI PARIS"
- Some instruments bear a signature by ink to the inside with name and date. (see #4040)
Also, more scarcely, a stamp on the outside back, at the heel of the neck, which reads:
"NADEGINI PARIS"
- The label shown in the iconography, of a violin dated 1912, was kindly provided by Mrs. WARREN Cynthia.
This violin is the earliest Paris-made violin by this maker that we have been able to examine, and differs significantly in model, arching and varnish quality from his later production.
Honors & awards
1907: Gold medal for sonority, Saint Petersbourg competition.

Bows
Bows stamped NADEGINI were generally crafted by the J. Thibouville Lamy workshop.
Mr. Pierre Guillaume tells us that he has examined two bows marked "J.B.L. Corolla in Paris".
These bows, both of excellent craftsmanship, having been made one by Charles Louis BAZIN, the other by Victor FÉTIQUE.
