Known as André II GRANIER

Biography

André GRANIER, son of luthier André François Marius GRANIER, completed his apprenticeship in MIRECOURT, in the workshop of Amédée DIEUDONNÉ.

The firm BARBET & GRANIER was founded in 1877, at 14 rue Paradis in Marseille. In 1910, following the retirement of Charles BARBET, Edmond GRANIER took over the business, assisted by his two sons, Denis and André I.

In 1923, they succeeded their father. However, following the untimely death of André I in 1924, Denis GRANIER continued the business alone. In 1928, he hired a young luthier from MIRECOURT, Pierre CLAUDOT, as his assistant.

In 1934, deeply affected by the economic crisis of the 1930s, Denis GRANIER retired from violin making. Pierre CLAUDOT then partnered with André II, Denis’s nephew, to take over the workshop. Together, they refocused the business on its artisanal roots.

In 1937, due to health issues, André GRANIER stepped down. Pierre CLAUDOT then took sole charge of the workshop, which he managed until his retirement in 1972.
