Biography

Career
Charles MOINEL was born in MIRECOURT on June 23, 1886, and not in Paris as some authors sometimes indicate. (1)
He was the son of François MOINEL who worked with Charles Eugène GAND, Joseph GERMAIN and GAND & BERNARDEL. He learnt his craft from his father and finished his apprenticeship with E. GERMAIN, ex. Jean-Baptiste VUILLAUME collaborator.
In 1893, when Nicolas Émile CHERPITEL died, his wife called upon Charles MOINEL, his nephew by marriage, to run the workshop and take him on as a partner.(1)
In 1899, he officially took over the workshop of Nicolas Emile CHERPITEL, and from that time signed his instruments « MOINEL-CHERPITEL ».

Works
Charles MOINEL is particularly appreciated for the quality of his copies after the great Italian makers, coated with a fine transparent varnish of golden yellow or a red brown colour.
Some authors state that he retired in 1921 or 1922 at Voulangis (Seine et Marne), where he still keep on making violins.
An inscription, written by hand inside a very fine violin we have been able to see, dated 1929, and stating « Charles Moinel Luthier à Paris 1929, 18 Fbg Poissonnière », arouses questions about this assertion.
