Biography

Pierre Marie Jules CLAUDOT, a descendant from a long line of MIRECOURT luthiers, was born on April 6, 1906. His father, Felix Charles CLAUDOT (1871-1906), also a luthier, died five months after his birth.

On the advice of his uncle, François CLAUDOT (1865-1937), a luthier in Dijon, Pierre CLAUDOT decided to study violin making.

In 1920, aged 14, he began his apprenticeship under the direction of Marius DIDIER and Camille POIRSON at the prestigious workshop “Atelier de la Lutherie d’Art” of Jérôme THIBOUVILLE LAMY in MIRECOURT. During this period, we found a few instruments signed in ink with his name and date.

At the end of his training period, he was recruited by Amedee DIEUDONNÉ, where his stay was, by his own admission, “very beneficial”.

In 1928, Pierre left for Marseille to join Denis GRANIER and his nephew Andre GRANIER II (1912-1986), who was also trained by DIEUDONNÉ in MIRECOURT.
Denis GRANIER, having been adversely affected by the crisis of the 1930’s abandoned violin making in 1934, leaving Andre and Pierre to work together in the workshop.

In 1937, Andre GRANIER was forced to stop all activity for health reasons, and Pierre CLAUDOT took over as sole head of the workshop, which he continued at until his retirement in 1973.
