Biography
Career
Son of the violin maker Sebastien MIREMONT, Claude-Augustin MIREMONT served his apprenticeship in MIRECOURT under his father before joining Claude Nicolas. COLLIN's workshop.
In 1844 Claude Augustin MIREMONT came to Paris to join Joseph René LAFLEUR's workshop, where he was likely trained as a bow maker.
MIREMONT then joined the workshop of Sebastien Auguste BERNARDEL with whom he remained until 1852, at which point he left France for New York.
In 1861 (or 1862 depending on sources) Claude Augustin MIREMONT returned to France to establish his own workshop, first at N° 6 Faubourg Poissonière (his workshop was still located there in1867 according to Malou HAINE), then farther down the same street at number 20.
MIREMONT retired in Belleville in 1884 before coming to Pontorson (Manche) where he died in 1887.
Works
C.A. MIREMONT is considered one of the greatest violin makers of the second part of the 19th century.
His work, especially his cellos, are highly appreciated by musicians, violin makers and collectors.
According to René VANNES , MIREMONT is thought to have produced bows as well. We have yet to come across a sample of his bow production, however.
