Biography

Who would not be intrigued to see inside a French violin, obviously made in MIRECOURT during the first half of the 20th century ,a label reading : “E de Cristofaro”.
These violins, of good quality and meticulous craftsmanship, were mainly built in the workshop of the luthier Amédée DIEUDONNÉ, and at times  by other luthiers including Léon MOUGENOT.

Born in Naples on February 11, 1870, Edouard de CRISTOFARO was the son and successor of a mandolin manufacturer.
Before opening a branch in Paris in 1892 at 12 Boulevard Saint Martin, he had representatives in France who made sure of the distribution of his mandolins, as indicated by his labels “Vendito et Deposito a Parisian” ( see Iconography).
Besides his instruments, he sold violin strings under the prestigious name Wieniawski, whose trademark he registered in 1911.

In 1909, according to the trademark registration concerning his production of Mandolins and Mandoles, he lived at 52 Rue de Mauberge in Paris. (1)
