Biography

When Gilles DUHAUT joined the MIRECOURT Violinmaking School in 1973, Bernard OUCHARD had been teaching bow making for two years, opening the door to a new generation of bow makers.
Gilles DUHAUT, like Benoit ROLLAND, Jean-Pascal NEHR, Stephane THOMACHOT and Christophe SCHAEFFER, to name but a few, were trained there, initiating the revival of the French bowmaking school.

In 1976, Gilles DUHAUT obtained his technical diploma as a bow-maker and left for Paris to join Jacques CAMURAT's workshop for a six-month training period, at the end of which he returned to MIRECOURT where he worked with Bernard OUCHARD.
In 1978 he joined Paul DIDIER in Metz, which he left in 1981.
In 1982 he opened his studio at 6 rue de l'Abbé Grégoire in MIRECOURT.
In 2012, he moved to Tours, where he set up a bow making school in his workshop, welcoming students from all over the world for training. (1)

Gilles DUHAUT is one of those craftsmen for whom passing on his know-how is as important as practising his art. His students come from as far afield as France, Korea, Japan and Spain (2).
His national and international clientele includes members of renowned orchestras as well as soloists such as Misha Maisky, Yuri Bashmet, Franz Helmerson and François Rabbath.
With Didier Lockwood, he jointly developed a bow model dedicated to jazz musicians (3).
